Hacking Humans: How Humans Work

Roger is a big believer in understanding how different people think, and here’s a profile system we use. If you are having trouble understanding, or frustrated at a new task, consider that perhaps the person speaking to you isn’t using the language that helps you understand. If you understand your brain’s preferences, you can then understand better by requesting the person rephrase in a certain way.

Every human is somewhere on the spectrum between these extremes, and may vary by area of life – i.e. you may be passive about your personal life but proactive about work, or vice versa.

Where do you fall? Give it some thought. Print this part out and notice it in your life, it will help you.

- Repulsion / Attraction. Are you motivated away from bad things or toward good things? Be honest. I’m an “repulsion” in some areas, and “attraction” in others – i’m motivated only by the threat of being broke some of the time when it comes to money, but toward the prospect of building something amazing and very valuable. Some people do their best work when I threaten to fire them (which is a real threat), others respond when I offer a bonus to have it done by a certain time. Do you respond to a cattle prod, or to a carrot on a stick? Prospect of reward or fear of punishment / dissapproval?

- Options / Procedures aka Outcome Goal/ Steps-to-Achieve. Some programmers respond better to “Here’s the goal make it happen” others need “Do X, then Y, then Z”. Which are you? Either is great. Often great programmers need procedures/steps because each of those steps requires so much work within itself – it’s fine – just realize if I’m giving you too much data or too big of a goal, ask me to break it down into smaller steps.

- Global vs. Detail - same idea, but fundamentally people respond to different data-chunk-sizes. If you’re overwhelmed, ask me/manager to break it down into smaller chunks.

- Sameness vs. Difference – do you relate to the word more in terms of what is the same as what you know, or what is different? Personally, I’m a strong “Different” which makes me great at certain things but more likely to piss people off because I’m so critical. Related to this is “Judger” vs. “Perciever” i.e. do you attempt to make the environment suit you (i.e. find a place for this data based on existing knowledge), or take in data and make up rules as you go?

- Fight, Flight, Freeze – when confronted, do you want to shut down, not answer the phone, dissappear? Go out and ignore your work? Or cuss me out? Any of it is ok – as long as you stay engaged. If you’re confronted, it’s ok, just call out why and be honest. I have a tendency for feature creep, and I know it makes code difficult sometimes – but sadly, the process is how I learn what we need to build. That said, if it’s a ton of work, perhaps we can reschedule for later, or we have to muscle through now – it depends. Anyway, rather than just be mad, you can always call me out – I’d rather you stay honest and open. My absolute priority is our clients. I (Roger) never get mad about you having an opinion or even telling me I’m wrong..but ya gotta be able to logically defend your position and explain it.

If you are in sales and/or find this interesting, pick up any good book on neurolinguistics. The above information is not a replacement for the classic meyers-briggs, or the “DISC test”, it is simply a way to learn more about how your brain works vs. brains of others.

Meyers-Briggs:

Extravert / Introvert

Sensing / Intuition

Thinking / Feeling

Judgement / Perception (above)

DISC Test (see here), measures

Dominance. Great sales people are often high “D”, as they’re willing to displace others i.e. interrupt someone and get them on the phone for example; low “D” people are great team players.

Influence

Steadiness – Low score = impulsive, risk-takers, High score = better with steady, consistent pace, defined paycheck, and are great for process-oriented work.

Compliance or Conscientiousness

First, a funny cautionary tale. It is up to the professional to handle the usual “do this and we’ll later do X, Y, Z” gambit (simple: We’ll give you a repeat client discount at that time! Til then we need to charge you enough to really get our attention, and keep your project a priority) to budget (well, let’s revise the project to fit your budget – i.e. show them how they’re getting less)….

Looking for a career worth having? Need flexible scheduling, but still want a real job where your efforts are valued, you’re paid well, and have opportunity for advancement? Looking for a career in which you can earn six figures and feel great about what you do?

If you answered yes to the above, we need to hear from you.

We are looking for “people people” – sales executives and small business consultants. Whether you’re a “hunter” or a “farmer”, technically skilled or more relationships driven, we need help reaching small to medium sized businesses of all types.

We have several product lines, all closely inter-related, which means you have a lead-in product for every business owner or results-driven sales professional that you meet. We’ll provide you leads and innovative tools to “open” the sale, unbeatable door openers like free videos, reports, and webinars – but it’ll be up to you to do the work. Our products include:

iSignature electronic signature system to help any business go paperless

SwiftWebDesigner internet marketing systems to build and revamp websites, turn un-performing locked-down websites into magnetic leads factories, landing pages, and search engine optimization services

SwiftCRM & SwiftBooks business software, leads distribution

Sales Introductions / Actively-Generated exclusive live-transfer leads and field-sales systems

…with more software in the pipeline, targeted for the small to medium size business owner.

What we look for and can’t be trained:

Integrity. Background checks are required, references checked. If you lied on your resume, don’t apply with us, it’s simply not a match. We are strictly win-win or no deal.

Intelligence. We’re less concerned about degrees or experience, but written and spoke communication skills are a must.

Organization. Tracking three deals doesn’t require much organization, but tracking 30 deals does. For you to hit $20,000 a month, you will need to be well organized and effective with your time and systems.

Motivation. We’re not going to micromanage you; we’ll provide the training and tools for success with coaching and accountability. Just to be 100% crystal clear, this is a commission-only sales position. We’ll give you leads, proven systems, free gifts, videos, postcards, and more to approach target businesses, but you need to sell. Sometimes that might be as easy as inviting a business owner to an online webinar, calling to offer a free SEO review, marketing online – but you need to be fine with cold calling, talking to incoming callers, and/or stopping by businesses in person. Some of the people who need our help the most are exactly the people not already online, or so busy because they’re launching a new business that they won’t come looking for you – you’ll need to farm or hunt for them.

The Requirements:

DSL or Cable. You need to have access to reliable broadband internet.

Moderate computer skills. You don’t need to be a programmer, but need to be fully adept at browsing in tabs, searching the web, and should be generally connected – using facebook, linkedin, and youtube will help. We are a paperless company; all sales are handled 100% online.

Internet on your phone is helpful – not required, but as soon as you get a few paychecks, we’d like you to have an iPhone4 and/or iPad or Android/Blackberry. We are already in development on iPhone / Droid / Blackberry apps.

If you speak enough english to read this job posting, you’ll be fine – some english skills are required for training and on-going communication.

Full time or part time. Full time is preferred, but Part time positions may be available for anyone who already is doing business with small to mid-sized business owners, such as advertising sales reps, accounting & tax professionals, consultants, etc. – anyone speaking with business owners all day.

What’s in it for you:

Great Pay. A star performer will make six figures. A base hitter will still make a great living.

Total Flexibility. Need time off for kids? Prefer to be off Wednesdays and work some of Saturday? Want to travel the world and work from a laptop? Fine by us! We pay based on results.

Opportunity for growth. We hope two years from now you have two assistants, earn $500,000+ per year, travel anywhere you like – the potential is there.

If this sounds right for you, please copy and paste your resume online at

One of your jobs as a sales professional is to give us “seeds” to work with. This includes:

Design “seeds” as you see below

Search Engine Optimization Keyword Seeds

Content Seeds. We can rewrite whatever is needed, but need the initial expertise of the business owner or entrepreneur.

One of our internal rules when starting to get some design ideas for a new site is first to look at their old site, if they have one, for certain elements you think they’ll like.

Usually, this is a good source for colors and fonts, and if a client has an existing website, we’ll reference it as a general inspiration, though of course we want to wow them with something much better. This is practically never an issue, simply because the web keeps changing, so most old websites still use tables, or bad code, or static “locked down” code that the client can’t edit.

Anyway, reference a client’s logo, storefront or office, any brochures, and their old website for some inspiration.

Last, here’s a short list of great websites to peruse periodically to see what’s new an exciting. This is a partial list as seen originally on http://www.websitemagazine.com/content/blogs/posts/pages/top-50-resources-for-design-inspiration.aspx
